Weaver Capital Partners wants to purchase a half-acre of property—or about one-third of what’s currently Decatur’s oldest dog park—and build two homes, which a nearby neighborhood is contesting.

The dog park, zoned single family/residential, is owned by the Samuel L. Jones Boys & Girls Club, which leases it to the city for $1 annually.

“We’re not seeking to deprive the developer of his rights,” said Lee Goldsmith who represents the Oakhurst neighborhood. “But this has an inherent social value as a public space, a community setting and dog park.”

Subdividing the property will be discussed at a Planning Commission meeting, probably in February, but ultimately the city commission renders a final verdict.
