Braves fan club holds fall luncheon
The Braves 400 Fan Club’s 2013 Call-Up Luncheon will be Sept. 25, at Turner Field’s 755 Club. Players recently added to the Atlanta Braves roster have been invited to attend. Former Braves pitcher and MLB All-Star Billy Wagner will make a special appearance to sign his new book, “A Way Out: Faith, Hope & the Love of the Game.” The luncheon begins at noon. The public is welcome.

Tax burden lighter for Ball Ground residents
Ball Ground residents will pay less in city property taxes this year.
The City Council late last week decided to leave the millage rate at an even 6 mills.
City Manager Eric Wilmarth says that, because the city saw a $1.3 million drop in the tax digest residents will, on average, pay about 3 percent or 13 dollars less-on taxes due in December. Mark Woolsey for the AJC

“Work readiness” workshops continue
Interviewing techniques, resume writing and other skills to help people land work will be the focus of DeKalb Workforce Development sessions weekdays at the workforce offices, 774 Jordan Lane.
More than 2,000 residents have attended the sessions so far this year. They are free and open to the public.

Peachtree Corners to examine SPLOST
United Peachtree Corners Civic Association will host a discussion of Common Core and SPLOST 7:30-9 p.m. today at Peachtree Corners Baptist Church, 4480 Peachtree Corners Circle in Peachtree Corners. Alvin Wilbanks, CEO/Superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools, will provide info on the AKS curriculum and its relation to the common core standards. Charlotte Nash, Chairman of the Gwinnett County Commission, will discuss the proposed three-year SPLOST initiative to be brought before voters in November. Info: www.upcca.org.

Powder Springs OKs funds for arts center
Around $40,000 has been approved by the Powder Springs City Council to buy furniture, fixtures and equipment for the new Cultural Arts Center at the Coach George E. Ford Center and Powder Springs Library, 4181 Atlanta St.
Business Furniture Services, Inc. has been awarded the contract.
A public opening ceremony is planned for 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 3 during the city’s 175th anniversary celebration week.

Airshow will close Fayette park
Fayette County will close Lake McIntosh Park Oct. 11-14 for the “safety zone” during the Great Georgia Airshow. The expanded event, taking place at Peachtree City’s Falcon Field Airport, will have both day and evening activities involving aircraft.
