City adds weekend hours to school construction

Through June 7, work hours will be extended to include weekends for General Contractor Balfour Beatty and the construction of King Springs Elementary School in Smyrna. The Smyrna City Council recently granted this extension by a 7-0 vote.

Due to rainy weather during the past two months, the project is behind schedule and additional work hours are needed to catch up. From Feb. 28 to June 7, those extra hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The main school building and sitework will need to be completed by the start of the new school year on Aug. 3, according to Councilman Corky Welch.

This property is on the northeast quadrant of the intersection of Reed Road and Gann Road and is bounded on all sides by single-family residential development. Usually, the Smyrna noise code - in excess of 60 dBA for a structure’s construction - is permitted only between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday and no work on Sunday to protect surrounding residential properties from the noise created by on-site construction.

The contractor’s request for early start times on the weekend is due to a labor issue, meaning laborers will go to other cities with earlier start times than 9 a.m. so that they can get in a full day of work and end at an earlier time.
