Officials said coals from a charcoal grill started a fire that damaged this house near Lawrenceville.

Coals from a charcoal grill started a fire that heavily damaged a house in Gwinnett County, a fire department official said.

Crews responded shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday to the 100 block of Ashland Manor Drive near Lawrenceville, spokesman Justin Wilson said.

The two-story house had heavy flames in the rear and through the roof. The three adults and a dog inside had evacuated and were safe.

No injuries were reported.

The residents said they used a charcoal grill on the back porch Saturday night, Wilson said.

“A fire investigator was requested to respond to the scene for origin and cause determination,” Wilson said. “The fire investigator has ruled the fire accidental and determined the coals from the charcoal grill started the fire.”

The home had extensive damage to the second floor and attic. The house on the right sustained heat damage to the vinyl siding.

Smoke detectors did not activate due to the fire’s location, according to Wilson. The residents declined help from the American Red Cross of Georgia.
