Having failed to attract a bid that met its minimum selling price, the Cherokee County School District has taken the former Canton High School building off the market.
The historic structure instead will house the district’s special education department, which will move from the former Buffington Elementary School, district Superintendent Brian V. Tower said at a recent school board meeting.
The Cherokee County schools had tried to sell the building and its parking lot, 1.8 acres at 110 Academy St. in downtown Canton. The building most recently was the district’s Downtown Center, until its headquarters moved earlier this year to the Dr. Frank R. Petruzielo Educational Services Facility at 1205 Bluffs Parkway, Canton.
Canton High was constructed in 1924 and replaced by Cherokee High School in 1956.
