Tuesday evening's light rains will give way to heavier downpours Wednesday and Thursday, with up to 3 inches of precipitation in isolated areas, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz predicts.

"Rainfall totals will be generally 1 to 2 inches across metro Atlanta with some isolated 3 inch totals possible, especially north of Atlanta," Nitz says.

The rain is expected to linger throughout the week, but there should be no repeat of the snow that blanketed the city on Christmas Day just a year ago.

Temperatures the rest of the week should be warmer than normal for late December, with lows staying well above the freezing mark and afternoon highs climbing into the 60s.

Normal highs would be in the low 50s, with lows in the mid-30s.

Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton  is predicting a 70 percent chance of rain Wednesday and Thursday. Highs through the period will be in the upper 60s, with lows in the 50s.

The weekend outlook is for a 40 percent chance of showers on Christmas Eve, with highs in the upper 50s and lows Saturday night in the 40s.

Christmas Day should be mostly sunny, with highs in the mid-50s.

Last year, Atlanta recorded 1.2 inches of snow on Christmas Day, while as much as 7 inches of snow accumulated in the north Georgia mountains.

According to the National Weather Service, Atlanta has had measurable snow on Christmas Day three times, while a trace of snow has fallen on Christmas 13 times.
