Three candidates’ debates are planned in Alpharetta in the coming weeks, ahead of the May 22 special election for mayor and two City Council seats.

The Alpharetta Business Association is sponsoring a forum and debate for mayoral candidates Jim Gilvin and Chris Owens starting at 6:30 p.m., May 1, at Alpharetta City Hall.

At 6 p.m., May 4, the Alpharetta High School Debate Team and National Social Studies Honor Society will sponsor a debate forum in the high school auditorium. All candidates are invited to participate: Gilvin vs. Owens for mayor, and Katie Harding vs. Karen Richard in the council Post 3 district, and John Hipes vs. Clifford Martin in Post 4.

All candidates are to return at 6:30 p.m., May 16, for a debate forum sponsored by the Alpharetta-Roswell Herald at City Hall.

The races were triggered when Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle formally resigned Feb. 21 so he could qualify for the Georgia’s Secretary of State race. Gilvin and Owens resigned from their posts to run for mayor; and others jumped in to fill their council seats.
