A Jamaican restaurant in Gwinnett County got a health inspection score of 44 on May 1.
Channel 2’s Carol Sbarge went to Kool Runnings Restaurant in Peachtree Corners to ask the owner about the violations.
Parry Hinds says after 19 years in DeKalb County he moved his Jamaican restaurant to Gwinnett County. One customer, Ronnie Lewars, eats at Kool Runnings once a month and was surprised to learn the restaurant failed health inspections twice in the past 2 weeks. First they got a 63 and then a 44. Lewars says the food is great.
Owner Hinds says he’s brought in workers who claimed they had adequate experience and training but says it has become apparent that he has to be more vigilant with them.
Some of the violations included an employee handled raw carrots with bare hands while cutting them, unwashed fruits and vegetables not separated from ready to eat foods, hot food not held hot enough and cut melon in the same container as unwashed melon.
Hinds openly talked to Sbarge about what he’s doing to correct all the violations. He says he’s going over procedures with employees and being very hands on.
He says if he sees something that is not being done correctly he tells the workers what is not being done correctly and shows them proper procedure. The owner says on Friday the health inspector spent an hour with employees here training them on what exactly they needed to be doing in the kitchen.
Hinds says his objective is to exceed the expectations of the inspector. He says he believes they are prepared for the next inspection. The re-inspection will happen within the next week.
Customer Lewars says he has confidence in the owner and says she will definitely continue to eat at Kool Runnings.
