A top Justice Department lawyer said Monday the Voting Rights Act is an equal opportunity defender.

Julie Fernandes, U.S. deputy assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, told more than 300 people that the Voting Rights Act is about the struggle “for the rights of all of us.”

Speaking at a panel discussion sponsored by U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Fernandes said the landmark law is still vital.

“This is about communities making sure there is equality for them, equality for all of us, no matter whose political ox is gored,” Fernandes said.
