The Atlanta Police Foundation on Sunday sent out an invitation to a ceremony celebrating the swearing in this week of new Police Chief Erika Shields.

The event, beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Commerce Club, will be hosted by Mayor Kasim Reed, the foundation and the Atlanta Committee for Progress.

In addition to Shield’s recognition, the event also will introduce newly appointment members of the Atlanta Police Department’s command staff, according to the invitation.

Shields was named the city’s top cop in early December after former Police Chief George Turner announced he planned to retire at the end of the year. Shields formally became chief Dec. 28.
