The debate over tougher immigration laws in Georgia will heat up Thursday, as foes of two bills that would establish Arizona-style laws plan a protest at the State Capitol.
Just what kind of impact might such laws have on Georgia? As reported in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Sunday, AJC reporter Jeremy Redmon recently traveled to Arizona, where he spoke with business owners, government officials, activists, tourists and others.
He found that nearly a year after Arizona’s SB 1070 went on the books, the debate over the immigration issue continues to rage in the news media, in political and civil rights circles, in neighborhood stores.
Many business leaders say the state’s historic attempt to crack down on illegal immigration has been a bad deal, and that the effect on Arizona’s economy presents a cautionary tale for businesses in Georgia. Supporters of the law counter that it is having precisely the impact they sought, despite the immediate hit being felt in tourism and other industries.
