Fulton County residents whose property values have increased may see a tax increase this year to support the school system’s budget.
The Fulton County Board of Education intends to keep the millage rate the same at 18.502, however increasing property values would bring in more tax revenue for the school district. By law, the district is either required to roll back the millage rate in order to bring in the same amount of revenue, or advertise the unchanged millage rate as a tax increase.
Fulton County has opted to advertise the tax increase, although homeowners whose property values have not increased will not be affected.
The school district’s efforts come at a time when Fulton County commissioners have proposed a 17 percent tax increase for the entire county. The proposal is on the commission’s agenda for June 18. The tax increase would cost the owner of a $275,000 home an extra $140 a year.
Three public hearings concerning the school board tax are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. June 10 and 6:30 p.m. June 19 at the Fulton County Board of Education administration building, 786 Cleveland Avenue SW in Atlanta.
