If you’re studying film or television in Georgia, in-state scholarships are available, but the opportunities don’t end there. A notable nationwide scholarship program to consider is The Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship Program, based in New York.

This scholarship awards up to $7,000 to juniors and seniors majoring in television, film and related fields at accredited four-year U.S. colleges and universities. Recipients are chosen based on academic ability, financial need and professional potential.

“We’ve had applicants from 125 schools nationwide and seven winners have come from Georgia,” says Assistant Educational Director Karen Kennedy. “Six Georgia colleges and universities have had winners of this scholarship.”

Those schools are: Clark Atlanta University, Savannah College of Art and Design, Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, University of Georgia and Atlanta College of Art, which became part of SCAD. Georgia State and SCAD are frequent participants in the program.

The King Family Foundation also sponsors the Michael Collyer Memorial Fellowship in Screenwriting. Collyer, a distinguished entertainment attorney in New York City, was a pioneer in devising legal structures for television syndication distribution, and for international co-productions taking advantage of favorable tax credits and other incentives.

This fellowship allows a student who plans to pursue a career in screenwriting the opportunity to write an original screenplay with a $10,000 stipend. The student also receives mentorship from a prominent screenwriter throughout the fellowship. Annual recipients are chosen by the Writer’s Guild of America, East Foundation selection committee from participating colleges and universities.

Visit kingfoundation.org for information about applying; applications are due no later than March 15.
