A Google-based charity gave Arbor Station Elementary School in Douglasville a grant of $17,100 to buy new technology.

The Douglas County school is outfitting a new learning lab as part of its effort to start a new science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program. The Google Inc. Charitable Giving Fund at Tides Foundation will help pay for that.

"We are excited about the opportunity that this grant affords our students at the elementary school level,” said Thomas Bruno, Assistant Principal of Arbor Station Elementary School. “This support from Google will allow our students to engage in hands-on STEM coursework and extracurricular activities that enhance student learning."

Arbor Station will hire a full-time teacher to instruct students in STEM classes next year. Grant funds will be used to acquire 30 tablets for the new STEM lab. All students in grades K-5 will visit the lab weekly for STEM courses.

The school is now forming a board of community members to help plan the new lab, implement STEM curricula and pursue funding for additional technology.
