Superintendent Meria Carstarphen of Atlanta Public Schools is doing what the school board brought her in to do -- positively change a system whose credibility had suffered under a previous administration.
A program aimed at saving money and turning around failing schools took off in earnest this year, as the school board closed and consolidated community schools and is in the beginning of turning some public schools over to charter school operators.
Carstarphen is acting with the support of the school board, but that board may change in this fall’s elections, and her bold moves have attracted critics.
