Atlanta Public Schools' West Manor Elementary School has been recognized by San Diego State University's National Center for Urban School Transformation for demonstrating high academic achievement levels across all student groups while serving mostly children from low-income families. The NCUST works to help urban schools improve.

West Manor was the only Georgia school recognized by the center this year.

And West Manor third grader DeAndrea West was one of 11 winners of the center’s 2014 student speech contest for her speech explaining why her school is “awesome.”

"Do you think that school is only for academic subjects and is the only way that it influences your life?" Deandre asks in her speech. "Well if you're do, you're so wrong…West Manor Elementary is shaping me into the person I want to be—me."
