Former Atlanta Falcons running back Jamal Anderson wants to be an example to others, and he’s ready to put his criminal troubles behind him.

But first, he’s got to serve a 12-day jail sentence.

Anderson was given a 24-month sentence after pleading guilty to DUI and failure to maintain charges from a September arrest in Hall County. The 43-year-old surrendered Monday and will be credited with time already served. With good behavior, Anderson likely will be out of jail by the weekend, his attorney, Arturo Corso, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

It's the second time since January that Anderson has pleaded guilty to DUI charges. Anderson's September arrest in Hall came just 10 months after his DUI arrest in Gwinnett.

On Jan. 12, Anderson pleaded guilty in a separate case in Gwinnett County, where he was sentenced to 12 months on probation, ordered to surrender his driver’s license, complete 40 hours of community service and avoid alcohol.

By then, Anderson was already working to get his life back on track, his attorney said.

“He has not had a drop of alcohol since September,” Corso said.

Drafted by the Falcons in 1994, Anderson played eight seasons wearing No. 32 before a knee injury ended his career. It may be his “Dirty Bird” dance, however, that fans remember the most about the popular player.
