Clayton County Public Schools officials are investigating an incident in which a 13-year-old Riverdale Middle School student was injured last week after a run-in with two other boys at school.
The injured boy struck his head against a bathroom wall during the confrontation Thursday and may have received a concussion. He was taken to the hospital. A school resource officer normally assigned to the school was at another school when it happened. An investigation began Friday.
District spokesman Charles L. White said Monday, “The principal and teachers followed protocol. We are limited in the amount of information that we can disclose at this time due to the ages of the students involved. Efforts have been made to ensure that all involved students received due process. The contact resulted from an earlier verbal exchange seemingly initiated by the student who was injured.”
The mother of that boy was unavailable for comment Monday afternoon.
The school district created its own police force less than two months ago, after the county sheriff’s department pulled its deputies out of the schools to devote more manpower to countywide concerns.
