Animal shelters in DeKalb and Fulton counties need help, and the people at LifeLine Animal Project hope metro Atlantans will stop by one of the shelters and take home a new friend this weekend.

Karen Hirsch, LifeLine spokeswoman, said shelters in both counties are running promotions to encourage animal adoption, and to decrease euthanasia of animals.

“These promotions will help get people in the door, which is what we need, because we know they will fall in love with an animal before they leave,” she said. “We need people to adopt these wonderful animals. Our mission at LifeLine is the end the euthanasia of healthy and treatable dogs and cats in Atlanta.”

At Fulton County Animal Services, the adoption fee on all animals will be waived through Monday. DeKalb County Animal Services is offering a $20 adoption fee for dogs over 6 months and a $10 fee for cats over 6 months, through the end of the month, according to a news release.

Both counties are experiencing extreme overcrowding, Hirsch said. The Fulton facility was built for about 80 animals, but is currently home to 350. She said there are more than 250 animals in DeKalb.

“All adopted animals will be vaccinated, spayed or neutered and microchiped,” she said. “The microchip will help identify the owner if the pet is ever lost.”

She said the animal’s first vet visit will also be free at participating clinics.

Hirsch said the shelters have kittens and puppies, as well as older cats and dogs.

“We even have some pure breeds,” she said.

DeKalb has a particular need for foster homes for kittens, the DeKalb shelter director said.

“We’ve had so many kittens too young to adopt come into our shelter that would do much better in foster homes,” Susan Feingold said in the release. “The public can help us by fostering kittens for a few weeks.”
