Live theater is coming to Chamblee this summer.
Onion Man Productions will begin producing plays at the Plaza Del Sol shopping center, 5522 New Peachtree Rd. Suite 111, in June.
Onion Man has produced the “Summer Harvest”, an annual collection of original 10-minute plays by local playwrights. Previously the program was run from Lionheart Theatre Company’s space in Norcross. Now it’s going to Chamblee.
Creator and Artistic Director James Beck grew up in the area and graduated from Dunwoody High School in 1983.
“It’s just time to step out on our own,” said Beck. “We look forward to being open for business.”
One goal is to offer the space to smaller theatrical companies who need affordable space.
That’s not the only change.
In the past, “Summer Harvest” was only open to Georgia playwrights. This year it will feature works by writers from around the nation and one from England. One new collection of plays will be produced in June, July and August.
This season, the plays are set lakeside – either on a dock or on the back porch of a lake house. Each show will be unique and feature a mix of comedic and dramatic 10-minute plays.
“What is great about this format is that there is always something new coming at you. It makes for an exciting evening of theatre and we have a special feature to our shows that make it a complete evening of theatre. And in addition, this year, we will introduce a new creative twist for Onion Man, called an ‘Episodic Theatre Romp.”
