Builder Duane Plummer brought a late 1970s ranch home into the 21st century to make it fit into a small Acworth subdivision with new custom homes.

“The house was kind of just sitting out on 8 ½ acres. What I had to do was I totally renovated the whole house and added onto it,” said Plummer, the owner of Evan Barrington Homes.

The renovations required not only making the Paulding County home look modern, but changing the orientation of the home, as he created a cul-de-sac of five homes. The side of the home became the front, featuring columns, siding and stone accents that give it a Craftsman appearance.

Residents: Duane and Allison Plummer and their children, Kylie, 17, and Barrin, 15

Location: Acworth's Satterfield subdivision

Size: About 3,800 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 3 ½ baths

Year built: 1978

Year bought: 2005

Renovations: Everything from the orientation of the home to the roof to the style changed. Plummer added on about 1,400 square feet, including a new master suite and bathroom, and a half bath. He finished part of the basement with a theater and other extra space. Outside, he redid the pool, pond and landscaping.

Cost of renovations: About $200,000

Architectural style: Craftsman

Favorite design feature: Wrought iron gates in the living room, which are surrounded by stone columns. The owner of another home had planned to take the gates to the dump when Plummer decided to use them in his home. "I wanted some separation from the front door to the living room," he said.

Favorite outdoor feature: The koi pond, which uses huge stones from the property. "We dug all the boulders up and pressure-washed them off and built the koi pond," he said.
