Rain will be short-lived Wednesday in metro Atlanta. But cooler temperatures and swift winds are here to stay.

Temperatures will start in the 40s Thursday, and wind gusts could get up to 30 mph, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Temps were 69 degrees in Atlanta, 61 degrees in Blairsville and 69 degrees in Griffin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The gusts hadn't even picked up to expected 20 mph highs Wednesday when they caused a tree to snap at the base, knocking out power lines in southeast Atlanta on Burroughs Avenue, the television station said.

Power was restored at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday.

Showers were expected to begin about 5 p.m. in the north Georgia mountains, cut into the northern suburbs by 8 p.m. and push through the rest of the metro area after that. Rain was expected to taper off by 10 p.m.

"The wind could be a factor, and I get concerned about our trees because they are at a weakened state," Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said. "And many of them have been coming down."

Along with the wind, below-average temperatures are expected to return.

The expected high is 65 degrees Thursday and 72 degrees Friday. But lows both days will be in the upper 40s.

“And so when you get up tomorrow morning,” Minton said, “you’re going to be saying, ‘Hey! Wait a minute! We’ve been used to these upper 50s and low 60s in the morning.’ We’re putting on jackets early in the morning because it’s chilly, and temperatures don’t climb a lot either.”
