Is Kroger the new Wal-Mart?

The Cincinnati-based grocery chain may be trying to take on the world's largest retailer and its competitors with the Kroger Marketplace concept. According to Business Insider, Kroger Marketplace "features nearly everything you would find in a Target or Wal-Mart store, but with a greater focus on groceries, alcohol, and prepared foods."

The typical Marketplace is about three-quarters the size of a Wal-Mart Supercenter, yet manages to cram in several prepared food counters, where you can order anything from pizza to burrito bowls to sushi; a wine bar; a fashion department; a jewelry store; and an emergency walk-in clinic.

Marketplaces also offers more appliances, home decor items, towels, furniture (both indoor and outdoor), and even dorm essentials than the average grocery store.

More than 120 of Kroger’s nearly 3,000 locations are Marketplaces.
