Updated 2017 story and information for the Gwinnett County Fair

Y'all — the Gwinnett County Fair is back.

Everyone's favorite bastion of fried foods and fun is officially open and will run through Sept. 25. The fairgrounds are at 2405 Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville.

All that said...what should you expect?

Lots of rides: In all, 54 of them will be on the lot — and they'll be as safe as possible, too. Fair manager Dale Thurman said he's had inspectors come in to give them all a once-over, even though it's only required the first time they come into the state for the year.

"It costs us a lot of money to do that," Thurman said, "but it's a good safety thing in our process."

Lots of food: Obviously. Thurman said there will be about 50 different vendors this year — and not all will be hawking "funnel cakes and hot dogs on a stick."

"There's one right outside my office here that'll be selling lobster," he said.

Lots of people: Each year, the fair draws about 200,000 people, and a lot of that is kids — Thurman said a free ticket is sent to every Gwinnett County elementary and middle schooler each year.

Lots of livestock: While some fairs are going away from traditional agricultural events like cattle and hog shows, Gwinnett continues to embrace them.

"We're trying to do it as an education, but a fun education," Thurman said.

Lots of parking lot lights: Thurman said new LED lighting has been installed on both of the fairgrounds' sprawling parking lots, making it easier (and safer) for fairgoers to find their cars.

Oh, and beauty pageants: Yup, the Gwinnett County Fair is home to the Miss Gwinnett County Scholarship Pageant (which is open to young women throughout the state). It'll be held at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Pageants will also be held for age groups from Baby Miss (0 to 18 months) on up.
