A suspicious package that shut down Moreland Avenue at Euclid Avenue for about two hours early Monday may have been artwork, Atlanta police said Monday.

Authorities noticed the package after they responded to a fire in the 1100 block of Euclid Avenue in Little 5 Points, Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones.

“Upon arrival, smoke was observed coming from a device that was in front of the location,” she said.

Homeland Security and the Atlanta SWAT bomb squad were called to the scene.

An investigation revealed the package was a mailbox with a radio attached to it, Jones said. Electrical cords were wrapped around the mailbox, which contained another small radio and some paper.

“All of the items were painted blue,” Jones said. “The smoke that was observed was coming from the papers that were burning inside of the mailbox.”

The package was disassembled.

“The bomb squad did not believe the device to be a hoax but instead may have been some type of artwork,” Jones said.
