A man was hit and killed crossing a busy road early Tuesday in Clayton County.

The driver told Channel 2 Action News he was heading to work around 5 a.m. driving south on Jonesboro Road when a man in a middle turn lane stepped out into traffic.

The driver, Steve Lawson, told Channel 2 it was dark outside, and the pedestrian, a man in his 50s, appeared out of nowhere.

“I don’t know where he [came] from,” Lawson said.

The man hit Lawson’s windshield and later died on the scene.

A Forest Park police officer driving north on Jonesboro witnessed the accident.

Police are reviewing the officer’s dashboard camera for more insight into the crash.
