At a meeting on Tuesday, the city council of Sandy Springs elected councilman John Paulson as the city’s mayor pro tempore.
In this position, Paulson will serve as mayor should Mayor Rusty Paul be unavailable. The vote in favor of Paulson was unanimous among the council.
Since the city’s inception in 2006, Tibby DeJulio had served as the mayor pro tempore. He remains on the council, serving District 5.

“Councilman DeJulio told the council that it was an honor to have served in that position, but it was time for another council member to step into a leadership role,” city spokeswoman Sharon Kraun said.
Paulson was re-elected to serve District 1 on the council after running unopposed in the 2017 election. He has lived in Sandy Springs for more than 25 years and has served on the council since 2009.
According to the city's website, Paulson is a native of Chicago, a Vietnam War veteran, and holds a degree in engineering from the University of Illinois-Chicago. He is married, has two children and serves as president of Dison Contracting and Supply, a consulting firm specializing in geosynthetics and reinforced soil structure design and construction.

Paulson, Paul and all the other new and returning councilmembers were sworn in on Monday night by Shawn Ellen LaGrua, a judge for the Superior Court of Fulton County. New to the council this year is Jody Reichel, representing District 4, and Steve Soteres, who represents District 5.
Reichel won the only contested race Sandy Springs had in 2017, edging out Le'Dor Milteer by 14 percent of the vote.
District 3 councilman Chris Burnett was absent from Tuesday's meeting, but completed his swearing-in before he left for Pasadena, California, to watch the Georgia Bulldogs win the Rose Bowl.
