The Duluth City Council recently voted to amend the city code allowing the mayor and council members to decline salary and/or per meeting compensation. Prior to this change, each member of the council and the mayor must elect to receive or decline compensation at the beginning of their initial term.

The new ordinance allows the council and mayor to elect to receive or decline compensation at the beginning of the fiscal year and to make changes quarterly.

Currently Duluth’s mayor receives $500.00 per month plus $150.00 per each official city meeting, not to exceed two meetings per month, which results in no more than $9,600 per year.

Each member of the city council receives $200.00 per month plus $150.00 per each official city meeting, not to exceed two meetings per month, resulting in no more than $6,000 per year.
