Gwinnett County public school students fared better than students in Georgia and across the nation on the ACT exams, according to data released Wednesday.

Gwinnett, Georgia’s largest school district, had an average composite score of 22.3, more than one point higher than the state and national averages. So did the Buford city school district, with a 22.8 average composite score. Thirteen Gwinnett high schools outperformed the state average. Seven did not.

Gwinnett's average score for the 2015-16 school year was two-tenths of a point higher than the 2014-15 school year. Georgia students did slightly better than the national average and showed improvement from the prior year.

The Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, which is typically tops in such comparisons, had the highest average composite score in the state, at 28.7.

The ACT measures student proficiency in English, math, reading and science and is used by colleges and universities as part of its admissions selection process.

Ten Gwinnett schools did better on the ACT in 2015-16 than they did during the 2014-15 school year. Norcross High had the biggest increase, from 22.1 to 23.1. Shiloh High had the largest decline, from 19.5 to 18.6.
