The parent company of Brown Mackie College, a system of for-profit institutions, plans to close most of its campuses, including its Atlanta location.

The closings by Education Management Corporation, the for-profit operator of Brown Mackie College, were first reported by The Consumerist. A spokesman for EDMC told the consumer news outlet that 22 of the 26 Brown Mackie campuses across the country stopped enrolling students as of Friday. Current students will be allowed to complete their programs.

A note on the website for the Atlanta location, at 4370 Peachtree Road N.E., says the campus is no longer accepting new students. About 400 students are enrolled at the campus.

Some campuses may continue to be open for as many as three years to complete the full “teach out” of students already enrolled, EDMC spokesman Bob Greenlee, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Greenlee could not provide particular information on the decision to close the Atlanta location.

“Generally the process when evaluating what institutions to continue enrolling students was regional demand, as well as demand for programs,” he said.

EDMC, which also operates The Art Institutes, announced last year it was closing several of those campuses, including the Decatur location, which also enrolled about 400 students. In November, the company agreed to forgive about $95 million in student loans to 80,000 former students, including almost 6,000 Georgia students, as part of a settlement agreement regarding the company's recruitment practices.

In addition to Brown Mackie College and The Art Institutes, EDMC, based in Pittsburgh, also operates Argosy and South universities.
