Gwinnett County officials are planning to realign some schools in new high school clusters.

Much of the change may take place in several central Gwinnett clusters such as Berkmar, Brookwood, Meadowcreek, Norcross and Peachtree Ridge, district officials said during a presentation Thursday. Some students will be zoned to different high schools once the redistricting is approved. The changes could affect approximately 14,000 students, Gwinnett officials said.

District officials said the redistricting is necessary with a new high school and three other schools under construction along with the continuous growth in Gwinnett. Its enrollment has increased by about 8,000 students in the past two years, district officials said. Gwinnett has more students than any other Georgia district, about 174,000.

The district plans to unveil maps with the proposed changes on Oct. 6. Gwinnett will seek comments and ideas from parents through committees and public hearings.

The school board is scheduled to vote on the redistricting Dec. 18.
