A man who beat a father of three with a steel reinforcing bar during a July 2018 road-rage attack in Spalding County has taken a plea deal.

Aside from the brief amount of time he was in jail before being granted bond, he will spend no time behind bars for his felony conviction, according to court records.

Christopher Michael Futch pleaded guilty to a count of aggravated assault while all other charges against him were dropped, records show. He will spend 10 years on probation and will have to pay a $3,225 fine.

The incident took place after Futch nearly ran Travis Abbott, his wife and their three kids off U.S. 41, the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office previously said. Abbott caught up to Futch’s vehicle, asking him, “Man, what are you doing? I’ve got my kids in the car.”

Futch then followed the Abbotts for several miles, demanding that they pull over, the sheriff’s office said. They eventually met in the parking lot of an auto parts store, where Futch and Abbott fought.

During the scuffle, Futch pulled out the metal bar, hitting the victim in the head. He suffered broken bones, a fractured eye socket, damage to his nasal cavity and a busted right eardrum, landing him in intensive care.

“I won’t do it again,” Abbott told Channel 2 Action News at the time. “(If) somebody tells me to pull over, I’m going to keep going.”

As part of Futch’s plea deal, he was ordered to never contact Abbott again.
