After Hurricane Irma in 2017, Gwinnett initiated the Gwinnett County Hazard Mitigation Plan to reduce or eliminate risk to residents and property from future disasters. As part of the initiative, Gwinnett has installed a new generator at the Parks Operation Center.

The Parks Operation Center houses equipment necessary for responding to disasters that can impact the county.

A majority of the $126,760 needed for the project came from the Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Assistance Grant Program.

According to information provided by Gwinnett, “grant-funded projects generally have a long approval timeline, this project was also periodically delayed due to manufacturing, skill trade and delivery issues caused by COVID-19.”

Mitigation grant funding is available to all city and county governments within Gwinnett. Applicants must be active participants in the FEMA-approved multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan.
