The Cobb County Public Library launched its new Books by Mail service Wednesday, giving homebound residents the option of receiving books and other library materials in the mail for free.

Library cardholders who have long-term illnesses, physical disabilities or lack access to transportation can now check out library materials online and have them shipped to their homes. The library will also provide a pre-paid return label to mail the items back.

“Cobb library workers are committed to overcoming barriers of access for the community and opening opportunities of engagement to meet the needs of all we serve,” John Willard, Cobb Library Collection Development Manager, said in a statement. “We are excited to introduce this service and look forward to the growth of Books By Mail to bring the library into even more homes.”

Items can be checked out four at a time and will be delivered about two weeks after the order is placed. Registration is through an online application.

The program is free to library card holders thanks to the allocation of $21,600 of American Rescue Plan Act funds by the Board of Commissioners earlier this year.
