Educational event will dig into importance of native plants

Georgia Native Plant Society shifts focus to hosts educational events, like one at Dunwoody Nature Center

The Dunwoody Community Garden is housed at Brook Run Park in DeKalb County. The garden was founded in August 2009 with 60 numbered plots.

What plants are native to Georgia? Why is it important to plant them? Those are the questions experts will dig into at an upcoming education event at the Dunwoody Nature Center.

The panel discussion, “Why Natives?,” will feature experts from places like the local Audubon Society, Monarchs Across Georgia and a native plant nursery.

Each of the panelists will share a 10-15 minute presentation on native plants before the event is opened up to questions from attendees.

The educational effort is a structural change for the Georgia Native Plant Society. Instead of  holding bi-monthly meetings, the group is now encouraging its members to form smaller chapters across the state and educate smaller groups.

The meeting will take place at the nature center’s North Woods Pavilion. The event is free and open to the public.
