Fresh off a record-setting year, Lil Nas X is gearing up to appear in his first Super Bowl ad. Doritos posted a teaser for their commercial featuring the Lithia Springs native on Tuesday.
The clip opens with a group of men at a bar pausing their card game as the tables quake. A rooster lets out the sound of an air horn rather than a cock-a-doodle-doo. As a man sways in his rocking chair, he looks down the way to see Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Hill, approaching on horseback. His record-smashing hit single, “Old Town Road,” begins playing as the rapper approaches the country Western town called The Cool Ranch.
“There’s a cooler sheriff in town. And his name is Lil Nas X. #Doritos #CoolRanch,” read the YouTube description of the ad.
Cool Ranch, is of course, the name of one of the most popular flavors of Doritos. The TV spot promotes the new release of the tortilla chip, which promises to be packed with more seasoning.
While the ad only features Lil Nas X, it follows a previously released teaser of actor Sam Elliot, who stepped into the aforementioned bar and recited lyrics to “Old Town Road.” According to a Frito-Lay executive, Elliot is set to face off against Lil Nas X and his “Old Town Road” remix collaborator, singer Billy Ray Cyrus.
“Fans have come to expect Doritos to show up big with our Super Bowl advertising, and since we’re making Doritos Cool Ranch even cooler this year, we knew we had to enlist the help of a few of the coolest and most popular voices of the past year,” Rachel Ferdinando, SVP and Chief Marketing Officer, Frito-Lay North America, said in a statement.
“Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus are as iconic of a duo as it gets to help us introduce the new power punch to one of our most beloved flavors — Cool Ranch. Pair them with legendary actor Sam Elliott and you get pure country ranch magic in a commercial that’s bound to get our fans amped on game day,” she continued.
The ad will air during Super Bowl LIV Sunday, Feb. 2 as the San Francisco 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs.
