Anthem, the parent of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia, is planning to expand its call center and customer care operations in Columbus and add 450 jobs through 2017.
The health insurer, in a news release Tuesday from Gov. Nathan Deal’s office, said the $3 million office expansion in Muscogee County will add to the 1,285 employees in its Columbus offices. Anthem will have about 4,500 workers in Georgia after the planned expansion.
The facility will involve call center operations, claims processing, patient enrollment, information technology services, billing and other functions.
The announcement is the second major insurance center announcement in recent weeks. Last month, Kaiser Permanente announced plans to open a $51 million customer service center in Gwinnett County and hire 800 workers over the next four years.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia is the state’s largest health insurance company. Anthem serves 72 million customers across its various subsidiaries.
Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Chris Carr said in the release that “supporting the growth of existing industry is a top priority for our department.”
