Melted ice that froze again on roadways created black ice on many metro Atlanta roadways Sunday.

While interstates and major roads are clear, the potential for ice means drivers should slow down. Local roads, especially in northern counties and the North Georgia Mountains, are still icy, but GDOT says the worst is over.

The Atlanta Streetcar suspension of service continues as crews clear ice.

MARTA was running without major delays Sunday.

Lows Sunday are expected to be in the teens early Sunday morning and warm only to the mid-30s in the afternoon, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

Monahan said people should limit time spent outdoors in the cold.

Temperatures just before 5:30 p.m. were 33 degrees in Atlanta, 29 degrees in Blairsville and 41 degrees in Eatonton.

“Hypothermia or frostbite is a big concern if you’re not protected from the cold,” Monahan said.

With temperatures at or slightly above freezing, ice and snow is expected to stick around through Monday morning, Monahan said.

Those low temperatures come after north Georgia was hit with a winter storm that brought upward of 4 inches of snow in some areas, and ice to other parts of the region.
