Upon further review, the Braves moved Danny Santana to the 60-day disabled list Tuesday after determining that his re-injured quadriceps would force the utility man to miss most if not all of the remaining weeks of the season.

The Braves had announced earlier Tuesday that Santana was reinstated from the 10-day DL along with rookie infielder Johan Camargo, who had been out four weeks with a bone bruise in his right knee.

But just before batting practice the team said Santana was placed on the 60-day DL, effectively ending his season. He’d been out since Aug. 18 with a quadriceps strain, played two weekend rehab games for Triple-A Gwinnett and reinjured the quad in the second of those games.

Braves manager Brian Snitker said rather than Santana risk further injury by trying to come back again before the end of the season, the Braves decided to shut him down. The move opened a spot on the Braves’ 40-man roster, which was taken by rookie left-hander Luiz Gohara.

“They re-evaluated him (and determined) there wasn’t going to be enough time to get him back after straining it again,” Snitker said, adding that it didn’t make sense for Santana to push it again trying to get back when the Braves already have seen what he can contribute.

“The big asset of his is his legs and what he can do with them. And now we go to spring training next year, now we know who Danny Santana is, how valuable that guy can be to our team, just with his versatility, the skill set that he brings.”
