Tim Hudson said Tuesday he was upset with how he was portrayed in a USA Today article, which quoted him as characterizing the Braves’ initial contract offer to him last winter as a “kind of slap in the face.”
Hudson clarified Tuesday that those comments were in reference to an initial offer the Braves made to him after the World Series last year, which was one-year for $2 million, and that the team came back with back multiple times with “fair offers at the end.”
Hudson was already in talks with the Giants at the time, and ultimately signed a two-year $23 million contract with the Giants, a number the Braves weren’t planning to reach anyway with a pitcher approaching his 39th birthday in July and coming off an ankle fracture.
“I totally understand their side of things,” Hudson said Tuesday. “I’m not and wasn’t bitter at all.”
Hudson said two quotes were taken out of a 30-minute long interview.
Hudson came to Atlanta with the Giants May 2-4 and was cordial with his former teammates, manager Fredi Gonzalez and general manager Frank Wren, who was in regular contact with Hudson during the negotiations.
“Our dealings during the negotiations and since have all been positive,” Wren said Tuesday.
Hudson spent nine seasons with the Braves and makes his home in nearby Auburn, Ala. He grew up a Braves fan and said he will always pull for the Braves, except now when they’re playing the Giants.
