Law enforcement agencies can have a difficult time gaining traction on social media. How do weather alerts and mug shots compare to photos of cute cats?

Cpl. Michael Kalinsky decided that if you can't beat them, join them. That's how the #weatherkitty campaign got started for the Cecil County Sheriff's Office, according to Delaware Online.

Kalinsky began Photoshopping an image of his cat, Foots, into weather alert posts on Facebook. In one such post, Foots is spotted near a car that has gone off an icy road. In another post, Foots is seen amidst milk cartons on a depleted grocery store shelf.

The cat-enhanced posts have been a big hit with the community. Foots even has her own Weatherkitty Facebook page.

Kalinsky says that the hashtag #weatherkitty has helped the department grow their audience, which comes in handy when they need the public’s help in solving a case.
