Q: My question concerns the death of Tom Hayden, a California politician and 1960s activist. As reported in a recent AJC article, he was arrested in the 1960s in both Mississippi and Georgia. Where in Georgia was he arrested and for what?
—Darryl Weaver, Atlanta
A: Hayden was arrested in Albany, after taking part in a "Freedom Ride" on a train from Atlanta on Dec. 10, 1961.
When a group of supporters didn’t clear the sidewalk at the train station, Hayden, the seven other “Freedom Riders” and three others were arrested.
They were charged with disorderly conduct, obstructing traffic and failure to obey an officer, according to “Undaunted by the Fight: Spelman College and the Civil Rights Movement, 1957-1967.”
Hayden turned 22 the next day.
Hayden, who was married to Jane Fonda from 1973 to 1990, died on Oct. 23. He was 76.
Q: Did the Clintons’ Chappaqua, N.Y., home have a security fence around it when they purchased it? If not, did they add a security fence?
—Allen Trent, Canton
A: The home at 15 Old House Lane didn't have a fence when the Clintons bought it in November 1999.
They received a variance for an 8-foot fence in December of that year. Zoning rules for the city at that time limited fence height to 6 feet.
The variance also included clearance to build a guardhouse.
A white-stained cedar fence and guardhouse for the Clintons’ Secret Service protective detail have since been built.
