Q: Former presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton spoke at the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. Why weren’t former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush at the march?

— Joni Pelta, Atlanta

A: Both of the Bushes are dealing with health issues and couldn't attend the celebration on Wednesday. George H.W. Bush, 89, was hospitalized earlier this year with bronchitis-like symptoms and his son is recuperating from surgery last month to repair an arterial blockage. "Laura and I thank the King family and all who work to carry on the legacy of a great man and the promise of a great nation," George W. Bush said in a statement. "May we continue to march toward the day when the dignity and humanity of every person is respected."

Q: I read in the sports section of the AJC that Brian McCann had laser surgery and a remedy for an unrelated dry-eye condition. Can you tell me what the remedy was for his dry-eye problem?

— Sandra Rousseau, Atlanta

A: McCann, a catcher for the Atlanta Braves, had dry eyes and blurry vision in 2010. On advice from his doctor, he quit drinking highly caffeinated energy drinks before games and began drinking more water. "I had chronic dry eye," McCann told the AJC in June 2010. "I was having to put drops in. Now, I don't have to do the drops. My eye wouldn't even hold a contact, they were so dry. And now that I'm hydrated and my eyes are fine, I can rub my eyes and tears will start forming. I couldn't do that before."
