A car was crushed when part of an overpass collapsed Thursday afternoon during an accident.

KTRK-TV reports an 18-wheeler driving with its boom up struck the bridge on Highway 36 at Highway 90 outside of Houston. The truck struck the overpass, causing part of the bridge to fall onto another car traveling on the road at the same time.

A 12-year-old girl was killed and another child was able to get out safely. The female driver of the car was taken by Life Flight to the hospital with a chest injury, KTRK-TV said.

Austin County Judge Tim Lapham told KTRK-TV the bridge has been struck before, on a regular basis. The state has it scheduled to be replaced in 2017, with the bidding process about to begin.
