Cobb County police said the woman pulled from a burning house in the 3600 block of Memorial Parkway in Kennesaw set the fire before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The body of Velina Hill, 54, was removed from the home on Friday afternoon. Arson investigators were called to the scene, but Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services did not immediately classify the fire as arson.

On Saturday, Cobb police said preliminary information from an investigation conducted with fire and emergency Services shows that Hill set the fire and killed herself.

The Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office will make an official determination of the manner and cause of Hill’s death.

A neighbor reported the fire at 12:22 p.m. on Friday, telling a 911 operator that flames were coming from the garage of the home. Firefighters arrived five minutes later, but by that time the back right side of the house was aflame.

Hill’s body was pulled from a back window at about 12:50 p.m. Fire officials called her husband at work, and he arrived a short time later.

Cobb police say the fire and Hill’s death remain under investigation.
