In one of the most hotly contested races this fall, Atlanta City Councilman Aaron Watson and his challenger, Mary Norwood, picked up key union endorsements Thursday.

Three unions that represent much of the city’s workforce announced they’re backing Norwood. Pledging support are the International Brotherhood of Police Officers Local 623, the Atlanta Professional Firefighters Association and the Professional Association of City Employees. The unions represent Atlanta police officers, firefighters and other city workers.

Watson, who holds the Post 2 at-large seat, picked up the support of the Atlanta North Georgia Labor Council AFL-CIO. It represents 87,000 union members across metro Atlanta, a politically active coalition of workers and groups.

Watson and Norwood are on the Nov. 5 ballot where all 16 Atlanta City Council seats and the office of Atlanta mayor are up for election.
