An Ohio couple in central Florida for their daughter’s funeral was not able to get home after Allegiant Air removed them from the plane because of their oxygen tank Thursday.
Mary Walker has a heart condition and rented the device as a precaution. When she tried to take it home with her on a flight home from Orlando Sanford International Airport, she was told to get off the plane.
“It’s like you’re a criminal or something like that,” she said.
A cellphone video taken from inside the cabin shows the flight crew taking the device and asking Walker and her husband to get off the plane because they didn’t have a backup battery or proper paperwork.
“They’re literally holding up the whole dang plane. They come back and we have to depart the plane,” said James Walker.
An Allegiant Air spokesperson said in a statement that a physician’s consent form must be submitted.
Oxygen concentrators are highly flammable, and the policies are designed to ensure they’ve been inspected for the safety of all passengers, according to the statement.
The Walkers will be in Sanford for a few more days.
The airlines re-booked them on a flight that leaves Sunday.
“It’s an inconvenience and it’s costing me more money because of their stupidity,” said James Walker.
