Movember is a time to grow mustaches and the Georgia-Pacific building is doing its part, by sprouting a 30-foot handlebar in one weekend.

The mammoth ‘mo,’ which weighs 300 pounds, adorns the front of Georgia-Pacific’s pink granite headquarters, and is a sign that the Atlanta-based corporation is participating in the effort to raise awareness of men’s health issues.

Movember participants grow facial hair to help raise money for research into prostate and testicular cancer, and to combat other significant health threats to men, including depression.

The movement started in Australia in 2004, where a mustache is a “mo,” and spread to the U.S. and the rest of the world in 2007. At Georgia-Pacific a clean-shaven Brawny Man is the team leader (Brawny Man once had a mustache and looked a lot like Chuck Norris) and teams at GP facilities in Palatka, Fla., Port Hudson, La., and Wauna, Ore., where they make the Brawny paper towel, are getting into the spirit.

In Atlanta employees at the downtown office building will participate in lunch-and-learn sessions with an Emory University cancer specialist to raise awareness, according to Georgia-Pacific spokeswoman Karen Cole. CEO Jim Hannan is even growing facial hair for the cause.
