Marietta pastors and youth pastors of the city's 54 churches are invited to apply for the next Pastor's Police Academy of the Marietta Police Department.

The academy will begin meeting in early September for two hours once a week for four weeks.

Among the topics pastors will study are the law, judgmental use of force and cyber crime.

Pastors also may ask questions, contribute new ideas, voice concerns or discuss police and community issues.

This academy is designed to reach out to faith-based leaders of all races and cultures to increase mutual understanding and resolve any community concerns.

The first academy led to the creation of a permanent group, which meets once a quarter, called "The Faith-Based Forum."

This forum enables the academy's graduates to continue to meet and exchange ideas with the police officers.

The academy has proven so successful that it has been selected by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police and by Motorola, Inc. as one of three state finalists for the Dr. Curtis McClung Award of Excellence in recognition of an inaugural, innovative program that fulfills a department's goal or vision for their community.

Final selection of the award winner will take place on July 27 during the G.A.C.P. Conference in Savannah.

Pastors and youth pastors with questions or with an interest in applying may contact Sgt. Grant Foster at 770-794-5358.
