The Cobb County Board of Education did not have a majority of votes Wednesday that could have led to a mandate that parents be allowed to walk their children to their elementary school classes.

Board member David Morgan made the suggestion, noting that principals of only 18 elementary schools do not allow this practice.

Morgan said parents need more access to schools when they are “up and running” and not just after school - as long as they do not interfere with instructional time or pose a safety risk.

In opposition, board member Randy Scamihorn said the principals need to be allowed to make those decisions.

Board chairman Susan Thayer and board members Scott Sweeney and Brad Wheeler joined Scamihorn in voting in opposition.

Board member David Banks abstained.

Voting in support, with Morgan, was board member David Chastain.
